How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as Department for Transport and Office of Rail and Road publish them, for the areas they were published for: map points.

Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.

Before you use it

  • Each station is one point. Its platforms and entrances are not shown.
  • Passenger numbers are the Office of Rail and Road's estimates of entries and exits from April 2024 to March 2025, mostly worked out from ticket sales. They are not exact counts, and a few stations carry a note about how reliable the estimate is.
  • Only National Rail stations have passenger numbers. Tube, DLR, tram and metro stations show a name and type only.
  • When the map is zoomed out it draws only the busiest National Rail stations. Zoom in to see every station.
  • Heritage and tourist railways are not included.
