How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Department for Transport publishes them, for the areas they were published for: councils.
Rates for larger areas are worked out again from their own counts and populations, never averaged from councils.
Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.
- Council2025 only
Before you use it
- The rate is the number of injury collisions reported to the police in 2021 to 2025, divided by five, divided by the council's mid-2025 population, for every 1,000 people.
- Places that many people visit or commute to, such as the City of London and Westminster, have more collisions than their residents alone would suggest, so their rates look high.
- Collisions are counted where they happened, not where the people involved live.
- Collisions with no injury, and injuries that were never reported to police, are not included.
- A council with fewer than 10 reported collisions in the five years has no rate.
- Barnsley and Sheffield use a population from before April 2025 and collisions inside their boundaries today.
Colours on the map
Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
How Open Index describes it
Page text on Open Index comes from this layer’s sentence rules, filled in with published figures. For Hackney:
In the five years to 2025, Hackney averaged 2.9 per 1,000 reported road collisions a year for every 1,000 people.
