How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Department for Transport publishes them, for the areas they were published for: map points.
Counts for larger areas are added up from map points.
Before you use it
- These are collisions that police recorded because someone was injured. Collisions with no injury, and injuries that were never reported to police, are not included.
- Severity is as the police reported it. Forces changed how they judge severity at different times, so Open Index does not compare the number of serious collisions between years.
- Each point is the position the police recorded. It is on or near a road, and is not an address.
- When the map is zoomed out, nearby collisions are grouped into one circle with a count.
- 2021 was affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
