How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Department for Transport publishes them, for the areas they were published for: councils.
Counts for larger areas are added up from councils.
Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.
- Council2021 to 2025 (5 years)
Before you use it
- This counts people, not collisions. One collision can injure several people.
- Killed means died within 30 days of the collision. Seriously injured is as the police reported it.
- Several police forces changed how they judge whether an injury is serious between 2021 and 2025. Counts in some councils jump from one year to the next because of this, not because roads changed, so do not read a trend from them.
- Larger councils have more people hurt because they have more people and more roads. This is a count, not a rate.
- Collisions are counted in the council where they happened.
- 2021 was affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
Colours on the map
Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
