Where it covers

  • England
  • Wales
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland
  • England294 of 296 councils have a figure
  • Wales22 of 22 councils have a figure
  • Scotland0 of 32 councils have a figure
  • Northern Ireland0 of 11 councils have a figure

45 councils have no figure for August 2026. The map hatches each one and gives the reason.

  • Scotland and Northern Ireland publish rents by Broad Rental Market Area, not by council. Antrim and Newtownabbey, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Belfast, Causeway Coast and Glens, Derry City and Strabane, Fermanagh and Omagh and 37 more
  • ONS does not publish private rents for the City of London or the Isles of Scilly because too few rents are collected there. Isles of Scilly, City of London

How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as Office for National Statistics publishes them, for the areas they were published for: the UK, nations, regions and councils.

Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.

Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

  • United KingdomJanuary 2016 to August 2026 (128 months)
  • NationJanuary 2016 to August 2026 (128 months)
  • RegionJanuary 2016 to August 2026 (128 months)
  • CouncilJanuary 2016 to August 2026 (128 months)

Before you use it

  • This compares the average rent with the same month a year earlier, as published (the Annual change column).
  • Local figures can jump from month to month because they rest on the number and mix of rents collected in each area. Small councils swing most.
  • The series starts in January 2015, so the first annual change is for January 2016.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland publish rents by Broad Rental Market Area, not by council, so only their nation figures are shown here.
  • Scottish rents are mainly advertised new lets, which were not covered by the cap on rent rises inside existing tenancies (September 2022 to March 2024), so Scotland's change is not like for like with England's.
  • Northern Ireland figures run two months behind the rest of the UK.
  • The City of London and the Isles of Scilly are not published because too few rents are collected there.

Colours on the map

Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
