Where it covers

  • England
  • Wales
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland
  • England294 of 296 councils have a figure
  • Wales22 of 22 councils have a figure
  • Scotland0 of 32 councils have a figure
  • Northern Ireland0 of 11 councils have a figure

45 councils have no figure for August 2026. The map hatches each one and gives the reason.

  • Scotland and Northern Ireland publish rents by Broad Rental Market Area, not by council. Antrim and Newtownabbey, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Belfast, Causeway Coast and Glens, Derry City and Strabane, Fermanagh and Omagh and 37 more
  • ONS does not publish private rents for the City of London or the Isles of Scilly because too few rents are collected there. Isles of Scilly, City of London

How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as Office for National Statistics publishes them, for the areas they were published for: the UK, nations, regions and councils.

Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.

Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it

  • This is the average monthly rent across all privately rented homes with 4 or more bedrooms, for new and existing tenancies, flats and houses alike.
  • Local figures can jump from month to month because they rest on the number and mix of rents collected in each area. The longer trend is a better guide than one month.
  • ONS treats the latest two months of the UK series as provisional and revises them each month.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland publish rents by Broad Rental Market Area, not by council, so only their nation figures are shown here. Scottish rents are mainly advertised new lets, and Northern Ireland's are advertised new lets only, so take care comparing them with England and Wales.
  • Northern Ireland figures run two months behind the rest of the UK. The UK figure for the latest two months includes an estimate for Northern Ireland.
  • The City of London and the Isles of Scilly are not published because too few rents are collected there.
  • These are official statistics in development, so ONS is still improving the method. The figures are not adjusted for season.

Colours on the map

Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.

How Open Index describes it

Page text on Open Index comes from this layer’s sentence rules, filled in with published figures. For Hackney:
