How it is made

Worked out by Open Index from NHS England's Organisation Data Service, Public Health Scotland and OS Code-Point Open.

Each active practice is placed at its postcode point (OS Code-Point Open), matched to the council boundary that point falls inside, and the practices in each council are counted. The period is the year of each list.

Counts for larger areas are added up from councils.

Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

  • Council2026 only

Before you use it

  • This is a count, not a rate. Councils with more people have more practices, and practice sizes vary a lot.
  • Branch surgeries are not counted. A practice with several sites counts once, at its main address.

Colours on the map

Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
