How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Historic England publishes them, for the areas they were published for: map points.
Counts for larger areas are added up from map points.
Before you use it
- Each point sits inside the building. It does not show the extent of the listing, which can cover a whole building, its grounds or a group of structures.
- Grade I is of exceptional interest, Grade II* is particularly important, and Grade II is of special interest. About nine in ten listed buildings are Grade II.
- The list changes every day as buildings are added, changed or removed. About 500 current entries have no position in the national data and are not drawn.
- When the map is zoomed out, nearby buildings are grouped into one circle with a count.
- England only. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland keep their own lists.
