How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as HM Land Registry and partners publishes them, for the areas they were published for: the UK, nations, regions and councils.
Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.
Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it
- This is an average of sales, not the value of any single home.
- Council figures are 3-month moving averages, so each month also reflects the two months before it. Regions, nations and the UK are not smoothed.
- Each release revises the previous 12 months as more sales are registered.
- Northern Ireland figures are quarterly.
- Council figures start in January 1995 in England and Wales, January 2004 in Scotland and January 2005 in Northern Ireland. UK and nation figures go back to April 1968.
Colours on the map
Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
