How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as MHCLG publishes them, for the areas they were published for: neighbourhoods.

Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.

Zoom in past neighbourhood level and the map keeps the neighbourhood shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it

  • Health deprivation and disability is one of the seven parts of the English Indices of Deprivation. It measures the risk of dying early and of poor physical or mental health.
  • Decile 1 is the most deprived tenth of neighbourhoods in England for health and disability, and decile 10 the least. A decile says where a neighbourhood sits among the others.
  • The indices describe areas, not people. Many people in poor health live in neighbourhoods that are not health deprived.
  • England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each measure deprivation their own way, so Open Index never ranks or compares them together.

Colours on the map
