How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as Office for National Statistics publishes them, for the areas they were published for: councils.

Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.

Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it

  • This is the share of people aged 16 to 64 who are in work, measured by a survey over a rolling 12 months. The period shown is the month the 12 months end in, so March 2026 means April 2025 to March 2026.
  • It comes from a sample survey, so every council figure has a margin of error. The middle council is about 5 percentage points either way, and some are much wider. Open Index marks a figure as use with caution when ONS's 95% margin is more than 7.5 points, or is not published.
  • Do not read small gaps between councils, or small moves from one release to the next, as real changes.
  • Each 12-month window shares nine months with the one before it, so neighbouring periods are not independent.
  • The City of London and the Isles of Scilly have too few survey responses for a published rate.
  • Barnsley and Sheffield figures are for their boundaries before April 2025.
  • Northern Ireland has its own labour market survey, published separately by NISRA.

Colours on the map

Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
