Where it covers

  • England
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland
  • Scotland(not covered)

Scotland publishes recorded crime by council. It has its own layers.

  • England31,660 of 33,755 neighbourhoods have a figure
  • Wales1,917 of 1,917 neighbourhoods have a figure
  • Scotland0 of 7,392 neighbourhoods have a figure
  • Northern Ireland3,780 of 3,780 neighbourhoods have a figure

1,000 neighbourhoods have no figure for August 2026. The map hatches each one and gives the reason.

  • Greater Manchester Police has supplied almost no data to police.uk since July 2019, so there is no figure for Greater Manchester. Bolton 005A, Bolton 005B, Bolton 001A, Bolton 003A, Bolton 003B, Bolton 003C and 994 more

How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as Police.uk publishes them, for the areas they were published for: nations, regions, councils, wards, middle areas and neighbourhoods.

Counts for larger areas are added up from neighbourhoods.

Zoom in past neighbourhood level and the map keeps the neighbourhood shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it

  • These are crimes reported to police and recorded by them, not all the crime that happens.
  • Drug offences mostly come to light through police activity such as stop and search, so the counts show where police looked as much as where drugs are.
  • Each crime is counted in the neighbourhood of the map point police.uk gives it, which is near where it happened, not an address. Areas are added up from neighbourhoods.
  • Counts mostly follow how many people live in, work in or visit an area. To compare areas, use the recorded crime rate.
  • Greater Manchester has no figures: its police force has supplied almost no data to police.uk since July 2019. Gloucestershire has none that include February to August 2026.
  • Crimes recorded by British Transport Police on the railway are left out, because it has supplied no data since February 2025.
  • About 1.5% of crimes have no location and are in no area figure.
  • Ward figures add up the neighbourhoods that sit mostly inside each ward, so they are close to, but not exactly, the ward's own.

Colours on the map

Seven groups with about the same number of areas each, worked out from the latest period and held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
